Best Mountain Bikes Under $500

Finding the best mountain bike under $500 can be a challenge. You will need to know what makes a good mountain bike and why there seems to be such a variance in prices, from as little as about $100 to well over $3000. There are good reasons for this and generally the pricier bikes are worth the extra price, in terms of parts, frame and components. But a more expensive bike is not necessarily the best for you, if you are starting out or just a casual rider you should be able to find a perfectly good bike among the more affordable mountain bikes under $400 or $500.

Since mountain bikes are built for all types of off road terrain, they are made to make riding on the rougher surfaces easier. They may therefore not be as comfortable on smooth roads, as road bikes, comfort bikes or even hybrid bikes would be.
